In the last blog I briefly spoke about Goals. If you ask most people, they will all tell you that they do have goals which is great however, are they probably all reply in the affirmative. I hope you have goals as well as I have had for many, many years.
I did have a problem with most of my goals thinking back to when I started making them. I won’t tell you exactly how long ago that was as many of you probably weren’t born yet but many years ago, when I had very little in my life and decided goals would be a good idea, I would think about them and write them down. Good start. However, because it didn’t seem possible to ever acquire them, I would discard them. Yes, I was letting my current environment dictate my goals and aspirations. Probably the worst thing you can do when determining goals.
So, I would say I would like to own a home completely paid for in a certain area of my city. Then I would say to myself, now remember this was many years ago, well the house is worth about $200,000 and I make about $25,000 at my position so it will never happen so forget about it and dream up a goal that is realistic. Worst mistake ever.
Goals should be made for every aspect of your life. Now that I have described the worst mistake, I ever made in determining my goal why was it so bad?
For starters, if you let your current environment determine your goals then you will never raise above the current environment. Make you dreams so large that it scares you and that little voice in your head will say something like “if you keep thinking this crazy, they have institutions for people like you”. Ignore that voice and just remind yourself that you are capable of whatever you want. YOU DON’T HAVE TO KNOW HOW TO DO IT TODAY.
Now I know what most of you are thinking now is that the little voice in my head was correct. Well, no it isn’t and when I look back on my life, I have accomplished a lot of the goals I had discarded. As you think of your goal you have intuitive “nudges” to take certain actions and you do these things and then the possibility of your goals come into focus. But you have to keep your focus on them or they just fade away. Next time I will relate how I accomplished a goal on my favorite leisure activity.
