How do you know when your Knowledge of Basic Strategy is where it should be?

Knowledge of the game is essential, and I will constantly talk about this topic.  But you may feel great about it and have taken the time to learn about it but how do you really know that you are using it at 100% at the tables?  Below I list some obvious indicators:

  1. Other players are snickering at you or depending on how bad you are playing; some may voice their opinion in a not so pleasant tone of voice. It may rise to the point that security is required to be called to settle someone down and I have seen this in prior visits.  Even if the mistakes you are making are small you may hear it from the other players as they believe by not playing “correctly” that it affects the cards they are receiving in a negative way.  Just as often it may help them out, but the point is that your Knowledge is not at the level it should.
  2. The dealer actually questions your decisions by asking you again what you want to do. I think the worst case of this I ever witnessed was someone who had a large stack of chips wagered and was dealt a 19.  The player wanted another card.  The dealer asked 3 times for confirmation, and I think as well so the pit boss could witness.  The player insisted on another card and as expected busted.  Now this is an extreme case but clearly if the dealer asks you for confirmation, you could very well be making a mistake.
  3. If you are doubtful at all in your decisions. These should be automatic and if they are correct then you have mastered the Knowledge part of the game.

I want to reiterate that it is great if you are perfect when testing yourself at home, but the real test is how you do in live action.

Something I do when either watching or playing at a table is that I watch the other players and, in my head, play their hands.  It is continuing practice and allows you to see situations that may not come up very often.  These little things just keep you sharp and will make sure that you do not make any mistakes.
